My eyes fluttered open but this time I wasn’t looking at the ceiling. I’d moved onto my side and was staring at the back of the sofa. I was still at the castle. Touching my lips, I recalled how I’d moved towards Beau and kissed him. Did he resent me for it? He’d kissed me back, but maybe now, given time to consider things, he’d reject me. He wouldn’t be the first, would he? The only person who’d loved me was now dead.

If Beau loved you, he’s dead too, my mind considered. I shook off my thoughts. They were a waste of time. I had things to do today.

Turning around, the large clock on the mantle showed me it was just after seven am. I had hours until Beau would appear again. Hours to deal with the fact that fantasy appeared to be reality. Before I decided what to do with myself, I needed to get a wash and something to wear. It was time to go find my mum’s suite of rooms. I made my way out into the hall.

“Morning, sweetie.” Iris appeared at the side of me.

“Jesus, Iris.” I clutched my chest.

“Sorry,” she said, but mischief danced in her eyes, leading me to think she was anything but.

“How do you know Beau?” I quizzed. Maybe my first question to her should have been asking why she was here, but I was full of queries I wanted answers to, and that was the first that came out of my mouth.

“I’ve bought furniture and paintings from him in the past. Your mum got him into selling some of the house’s antiques to raise funds for the upkeep of the place, but of course she could only help him sell to the humans. He knew he’d make more money dealing with the fae. I became fond of your mother, even though I did not know her for long, so when Beau asked me if I could help with the ball, I agreed.”

“If it hadn’t been so sudden, do you think he would have turned her?” I asked.

“Hmm,” she pondered. “I think that’s a question you need to ask Beau directly, but personally, I don’t think he would have. Because if your mum wanted to be a vampire, she could have asked him to sire her while she was alive.”

“I will ask him.”

“I’m sure you will, along with another million questions while your mind assimilates with the fact all you’re experiencing is real. Now,” she said. “Let me take you to your mother’s rooms. I’m guessing you were headed there anyway?”

“Yes. I need something to wear so that I can go out to buy food, and no, I don’t want any of your food.”

She smirked. “I didn’t bring you any.”

I paused to examine Iris. “Why are you helping me?”

“Because I liked your mum. Think of me as your faerie godmother. I’ll be around today to show you what your mum left you, and tell you what she did around the place, how it all worked.
